The film is an adaptation of the Tony-winning autobiographical play by Larry Kramer, which tells the story of the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York City during the early 1980s.

Savages actor Kitsch will play Bruce Niles, who is a closeted investment banker but was elected as the president of Ned Weeks's organisation that aims to raise awareness about the 'unknown disease' that was killing many gay men in New York City.

Ned (Ruffalo) is an activist who starts to find an explanation for the deaths of his friends in the gay community due to the unknown disease.

Parsons, who is best known for his role on The Big Bang Theory, will play gay activist Tommy Boatwright.

Roberts was cast as Dr Emma Brookner, who treats the earliest victims of HIV/AIDS, while Bomer will take on Felix Turner, a New York Times reports who starts to date Ned.

The Normal Heart, which is written by Kramer and directed by Glee's Ryan Murphy, is planned for a 2014 debut.
