Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo to star in HBO movie 'The Normal Heart'

Julia Roberts will star opposite Mark Ruffalo in an HBO movie adaptation of the play "The Normal Heart."

"Glee" creator and "Eat Pray Love" writer and director Ryan Murphy will direct the film about the onset of the AIDS crisis in New York City during the early 1980s, according to the Associated Press.

The play, written by Larry Kramer, is about the men who helped him form the Gay Men's Health Crisis. It debuted in 1985 and returned to Broadway in 2011. The 2011 production won a Tony Award for Best Revival.

Roberts will play a paraplegic doctor named Dr. Emma Brookner, who treated several of the earlier ADIS victims. Ruffalo will star as Ned Weeks, a man who sought answers after witnessing the disease begin to kill many of his peers.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the movie will debut in 2014 and Kramer will adapt the play for the film.
