Trailer Talk: Valentine's Day

2009 marked the death of the movie star. Hollywood finally came to the realization that a marquee name is no longer enough to attract audiences, with A-list actors --Julia Roberts (Duplicity), Johnny Depp (Public Enemies), Tom Hanks (Angels & Demons), Denzel Washington and John Travolta (The Taking of Pelham 123) -- failing to score box office wins, while films with no recognizable cast (District 9)are spinningbox office gold.

What's a movie studio to do? Forget their beloved star system and instead invest in -- gasp! -- compelling scripts and unknown talent? Perhaps. Or perhaps, instead of headlininga film with one or two big names, theypack it with more stars than ever before. That seems to be the reasoning behind Valentine's Day, which features Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Garner, Patrick Dempsey, Eric Dane, Ashton Kutcher, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Alba, Emma Roberts, Taylor Lautner, Jessica Biel, Topher Grace, Queen Latifah, Shirley MacLaine, George Lopez and Jamie Foxx.

Sure, the cast couldpower a small community with itsstar wattage alone, but will the film be any good? Don't ask us; judging by the trailer, we can't even figure out what it's about. But my, isn't everyone pretty?
