Julia Roberts to Play the Queen in 'Mirror Mirror' -- Other Actresses that Rocked the Same Role

One of America's reigning sweethearts, Julia Roberts, is set to take on the role of The Queen in Tarsem Singh's "Mirror Mirror," a comical re-telling of the classic fairy tale "Snow White." The movie opens March 30 and we're sure that Roberts is probably hoping to make a lasting impression by playing such an iconic part. If she succeeds, the "Pretty Woman" star will join a group of actresses who have taken the same role and made it all their own.

Lucille La Verne - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Most people mistakenly believe that if you have top of the line animation in your film, then it is guaranteed to be a success. However, that is only one ingredient -- films need to be stacked with engaging characters, including a memorable villain. One need only look at Walt Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" for one of the best examples of such a villain in film history. Voiced by Broadway and Film veteran Lucille La Verne (who also provided the artists' model for the Witch), the Evil Queen brought just the right amount of terror to the animated classic, with La Verne nimbly shifting characters when it came time to voice the Witch. La Verne's take stays with you long after viewing, and even helped land the Evil Queen on the American Film Institute's List of 100 Villains at number ten.

Sigourney Weaver - Snow White: A Tale of Terror

Sigourney Weaver gave her take on the Wicked Queen in this 1997 adaptation on the classic story, which infused bits of horror into the proceedings. Though many would balk at the idea (more than likely because they are more familiar with the Disney version), the film stayed closer to the actual Brothers Grimm story than most other versions. The role of Lady Claudia gave Weaver a lot to work with; this character did not essentially start out as evil, but slowly slipped into madness as circumstances surrounding her life became harder to accept. Th! e film a lso starred Sam Neill as Weaver's husband, and Monica Keena as Lilli (Snow White.)

Charlize Theron - Snow White and the Huntsman

Though it has not been released just yet, audiences have already seen glimpses of this updated re-telling of the classic fairy tale, with "Twilight's" Kristen Stewart set to play Snow White and Academy Award winner Charlize Theron ("Monster") as the Queen. It appears that it will be more action packed than most versions, with Snow White taking on a more proactive role in the thwarting of the Evil Queen. However, just based on the trailer, the movie might actually belong to Theron, who manages to ooze evil in the brief scenes that are shown. If done right, she could possibly rank as one of the best Evil Queens ever.
